Josh Boone talks to Collider about TFIOS casting

TFIOS director Josh Boone recently talked to Collider about his first movie 'Stuck in Love' and also answered a few questions about TFIOS. Check out the rest of the very interesting interview at the source!!

Collider: Now that you’re set to start production on The Fault in Our Stars, are you getting more excited or nervous about shooting that?

BOONE: I can’t wait! That’s the fun part. Writing, for me, is the part that I dread. I really enjoy the process where you dream up the script. When I actually get in the room and have to write, I just want to get the hell out of that room. I go every day and try to write my way out of that room, so that I can go work with the actors. The part that’s fun is going and hanging out with everybody, and making a movie.

Collider: Audiences are getting more and more familiar with Shailene Woodley and what she’s capable of, as an actress. But, what was it about her that caught your attention and made you want her for the film?  

BOONE: She was the first person that made me cry. I’d seen so many girls, and I was just really moved. I knew within maybe a minute and a half, after she started doing it. I had met her and had a dinner with her, and she was the nicest, most outgoing, coolest person, but I was like, “She doesn’t really seem like Hazel.” But then, she came in and she was Hazel. She was a completely different person, with the physicality and everything. It was pretty amazing to see. I was just blown away by her.

Collider: How challenging was it to then find an actor to play Augustus, opposite her?

BOONE: That was really challenging, and that involved a lot of chemistry reads between her and a lot of different guys to find the right combo that really felt like it worked.

Collider: What do you feel most excited about, in getting to bring that story to the screen for people? 

BOONE: I’m bringing a lot of music to the table. When I went to Fox to pitch my take on the movie, I brought a lot of music and a lot of song cues for specific moments, and I brought a lot of photographs in from photographers that I really like, that I thought captured the tone of the piece. I just love all of it. I told Scott [Neustadter] and Michael [Weber], who wrote the script and wrote 500 Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now that Shailene is in, that they did the hard part for me. I get to go do the fun part.

Ben Richardson has won an Independent Spirit award (amongst others) for his work on Beasts of the Southern Wild.

In a recent Q&A podcast for KCET Cinema Series while promoting "Stuck in Love," TFIOS director Josh Boone revealed some important production members of the film. Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott, members of the indie-rock band Bright Eyes, who also scored "Stuck in Love," will score TFIOS. Also Boone will bring back the "Stuck in Love" editing team which includes editor Robb Sullivan.

Josh Boone also talks quickly about the process of becoming the director of TFIOS. He mentions that TFIOS will feature some "pretty amazing people," but none of the deals have been closed yet. TFIOS production starts in two weeks.

Josh Boone mentions TFIOS in another interview - Script is "very true to the novel"

Moveablefest: "Stuck in Love" demonstrates an obvious admiration for writers and your next film is adaptation of John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars." Though it was scripted by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber ("The Spectacular Now"), has it been interesting to interpret someone else's work? 

JB: I still can't believe they are letting me make that movie, but Fox, the studio that did it, and John Green, who wrote the book really liked ["Stuck in Love"] and liked my take on the material, so I hope I can do it justice. The script was done before I ever came onboard, but [Scott and Michael are] such good writers and John was so happy with the script that I think fans will be really happy. It's very true to the novel. Then as soon as I'm done with "Fault in Our Stars," I'm going to make another movie with Judy Cairo, who produced "Stuck in Love," called "Pretenders" with Michael B. Jordan from "Fruitvale Station," Imogen Poots and Anton Yelchin.

We're so happy everybody involved seems as excited as we are!!

Josh Boone mentions TFIOS in a recent interview with Shockya - reveals shooting location

SY: In the future, would you be interested in both writing and directing films you work on?

JB: Yeah, I’m getting ready to make a movie for Fox right now, called ‘The Fault in Our Stars,’ which is based on a best-selling novel by John Green. I wrote the script for ‘Pretenders,’ which I’m going to do after that. I wrote the script with Judy Cairo, who produced ‘Stuck in Love.’ So I’m booked for two, and hopefully I get to keep working after that.

‘The Fault in Our Stars’ is a young adult novel by John Green, who’s a very famous novelist, and has a very strong online presence. He does YouTube videos with his brother that millions of people watch. He wrote this beautiful book about two teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. It’s very snarky and cynical and funny, and says interesting things about life and death. We cast Shailene Woodley from ‘The Descendants’ in that. We’re going to shoot that in Pittsburgh, staring on August 26. 

When I came to this one, the script was already on the table. The guys who wrote ‘(500) Days of Summer’ (Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber) adapted the script. It was such a beautiful script, I really wanted to do it. I was really lucky that Fox liked the movie, and let me do it.

Josh Boone reveals that Isaac & one other character has almost been cast

A blogger for PageToPremiere recently met Josh Boone, director of the movie, at a screening for his first movie "Stuck in Love" and tried to find out some things about TFIOS. This is what he had to say:

I tried to pry a little more information from Boone, but he could not say much for legal reasons. The biggest hint he dropped was mentioning they are close to casting the role of Isaac and another character. Boone spoke highly of author John Green, who he speaks to frequently about the movie’s progress. He also mentioned they want to involve the Green as much as possible, but he is not an overbearing presence in the process. Boone also praised the screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who co-wrote (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now, and Nat Wolff agreed TFIOS script is great.

Sounds exciting! Also we're very glad John Green is very involved in the making of the movie.
We'll see who it will be. Just last week Nat Wolff hinted that he may be in negotiations for the role of Isaac.

Josh Boone talks to the Inquisitr about TFIOS

THE INQUISITR: Something that’s really exciting is that you have The Fault In Our Stars coming up. How did that come to be? 

 BOONE: Yeah I still can’t believe I got it. A company called Temple Hill owned the book and brought it to Fox searchlight. Fox Searchlight hired the guys that wrote 500 Days of Summer to adapt it, and then they started meeting with directors. I still can’t believe I get to go make it. They just really liked my version of that movie. They liked what I came and said I was going to do with it, so we’re going to start shooting on August 26. The book is just so important to so many people that I want to make sure it’s as truthful as it can be.

THE INQUISITR: Both Stuck In Love and your next project deal with pretty sensitive subjects with teens. Do you feel pulled towards youth? 

 BOONE: I still feel young. I don’t think anyone ever truly grows up and I think that’s what Stuck In Love is about too. It’s a coming of age story for the parents as much as it is for the kids. I feel you get up and look in the mirror, and you go to work, and you still kind of feel like you’re just pretending to be an adult. I think it’s a feeling a lot of people have. That’s the feeling I have most of the time. I still feel like that kid in high school.

THE INQUISITR: Do you see yourself as a director or a writer? And does one job reflect the other?
 BOONE: Once you write the script I’m almost never the writer again. Once you’re the director, you kind of hate the writer, and you’re like ‘Who the f—k wrote this?’ I don’t enjoy writing. Writing is very difficult; it’s lonely and isolating. The time you spend dreaming about the script, like when you’re in your car just thinking about the characters, that stuff I really enjoy. Actually writing is just the worst. You want to write yourself out of that room. On The Fault In Our Stars I was so happy because I didn’t have to go off and do the hard part. I just get to go make the movie!
