LA Times' Faces to Watch 2014 - Ansel Elgort

The LA Times asked its reporters and critics to highlight figures in entertainment and the arts who will be making news in 2014. Here’s who they picked:

Ansel Elgort | Actor

Before Ansel Elgort was cast in two of next year's most highly anticipated movies, he had 900 followers on Instagram. Now — just months after shooting the dystopian action flick "Divergent" and the cancer love story "The Fault in Our Stars" — he's up to more than 117,000.

Both films are adaptations of bestselling young-adult novels, and if fans of the books turn up at theaters in droves, Elgort is primed to become the next big teen heartthrob. In a way, though, the 19-year-old has been readying himself for the spotlight for years. Growing up in Manhattan, he performed the Nutcracker with the New York City Ballet and attended LaGuardia High School — the performing arts school that 1980's "Fame" was based on. His parents were also in the arts: His mother is opera director Grethe Holby and his father, Arthur Elgort, shot photographs for Vogue.

Did your parents' professions influence your decision to be an actor?
It was monumental that they were in the arts. My dad was always taking photos of us at home, and even on set — he'd bring us along and stick us in the photos in the background. It was almost the beginning of acting for me, like, "Hey, you go over there and play basketball in the background, and don't even think about the camera."

In "Divergent," you play the brother of Shailene Woodley's character. In "The Fault in Our Stars," you're her lover. Have you two become really close?
I think she had a lot to do with me getting the part in "Fault." We were actually in the middle of "Divergent" when I auditioned, and she already had the part. So after our chemistry read, we were back on the "Divergent" set and she actually said, "Ansel, your audition was the best." And she sort of lobbied for me, I think.

Once you got the part, what kind of research did you do to play a cancer patient?
What I wanted to know is what my character would have heard from the doctors — what it would have been like to lose a leg, or how to make a decision to travel somewhere for treatment. We also had a lot of kids on set who were real cancer survivors, and they were so excited and nice. No one was like, "You don't really have cancer." There were no hard feelings.

How do you think you'll handle the attention that might be coming your way in the next few months?
I live in Brooklyn, and I'm going to do everything in my power to remain normal and keep my life as it is. I like to go to the rock climbing wall. And I do this thing called Warhammer, where I paint miniature [figurines]. They're like a very small army of soldiers that you use in a game. Kind of like in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." I also produce house music and DJ under the name Ansolo.

How do you get into clubs to DJ if you're underage?
You can DJ at 18 in clubs. I've DJed at [the nightclub] Pacha, and they walk me over to the booth, and at the end of the night, they just escort me out.

TFIOS Tagline - "It shows the humor of the story"

On Wednesday morning, the official TFIOS movie poster was released, causing many to tweet "OMG," "DYINGGGGG," and "How am I going to suvive June 6?" While many were excited, some were actually shocked by the tagline written underneath Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Augustus' (Ansel Elgort) faces. "One sick love story." As huge fans of the book, we actually loved it because it's not a cheesy love tagline, it gives an insight to the humor that is the book and will be in the movie.

John Green, who did not write the tagline, talked a little bit about the tagline on his "Project For Awesome" livestream.

"The book has a reputation of being dramatic and making people feel all of the things. One of the things is humor," John said. "I think it cuts the softness of the image to say 'You're not going to be watching a soft sentimental movie, you're gonna watch a movie that has an edge to it.'"

When a commenter wrote that the tagline was "sick-ploitation" John responded that he did not think so.

"I don't think so. I think this is pretty much a joke Hazel would make," John replied. "Hazel is pretty explicit about her illness and makes fun of it quite a lot."

John also addressed a question about the tagline on his Tumblr page

Shailene Woodley talked TFIOS with The Hollywood Reporter at the 2013 Gotham Awards

Shailene talked to The Hollywood Reporter at last night's Gotham Awards (where she was nominated in the category Best Actress for her movie The Spectacular Now). She also mentioned The Fault in our Stars. Check out what she had to say below:

Woodley also gushed about her upcoming movie version of The Fault in Our Stars, saying "I don't think I've ever been more passionate about a project."

"I think the book contains so many important lessons for the world to hear and the fact that they're being told by two 16 year-olds is even more profound and I can honestly say being part of that movie was one of the biggest honors of my life," she added, insisting fans of the book would appreciate their "verbatim" adaptation.

Josh Boone talks TFIOS and more with Hamptonroads

The first one is always the hardest.
"Stuck in Love," writer-director Josh Boone's film drama about a family of dysfunctional writers starring Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly, barely found an audience. Critics gave it mixed reviews.
There was a one-night screening at the Naro Expanded Cinema in Norfolk - mostly attended by family and friends - to celebrate the Virginia Beach native's moviemaking debut.
But it was a start.
The next chapter of Boone's Hollywood dream, a film adaptation of John Green's best-seller, "The Fault in Our Stars," has the potential to be a real blockbuster. The movie already has a fan base, evidenced by the teenage girls who, copies of the novel in hand, camped outside the Episcopal church in Mount Lebanon, Pa., near Pittsburgh, where filming took place this fall.
The emotionally charged novel revolves around 16-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, who has stage 4 thyroid cancer and is able to survive only with an experimental drug and an oxygen tank that she calls "Philip." She's played by one of Hollywood's hottest young stars, Shailene Woodley, who starred in 2011's "The Descendants."
Before filming, Woodley had her long, wavy hair cut - Boone flew to L.A. to monitor the new hairdo - and lost weight to morph into Hazel.
Laura Dern plays her smothering mom. She pushes Hazel to attend a weekly support group whose members, a rotating cast of characters, circle around a huge rug with an image of Jesus. The rug was made by Patrick - portrayed by comedian/actor Mike Birbiglia - the group leader and the only member over 18. He starts each meeting with his experience: He survived testicular cancer but lost both testicles.
Tragedy, though, is trumped by humor, and when Boone shouts "Cut!" on the Pennsylvania set, everyone lets out a gasp of nervous laughter.
During one meeting, Hazel is drawn to the tall and handsome Augustus "Gus" Waters (newcomer Ansel Elgort), a basketball player who lost his right leg just below the knee to cancer but is in remission.
But "Fault," Boone said, is more than a love story. Hazel and Gus bond over a book she loves, and the movie builds to their trip to Amsterdam, where they hope that the reclusive author, Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe), will answer their questions.
If it sounds like "The Wizard of Oz," that's the way Boone pitched it during his audition with producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, the guys behind "The Twilight Saga" and TV's "Revenge."
"You spend the whole movie waiting to meet this man," Boone said. "It's them coming to Emerald City."
He was drawn to "Fault" after one of his close friends, a record store owner who gave him his first job in L.A., died from lung cancer. It was aggressive, and Boone, 34, was at his friend's bedside most of his final month.
While directing "Stuck in Love," Boone read Green's novel, then got a copy of the script when it started circulating around Hollywood.
"I read it, never thinking I would direct anything I didn't write," he said.
But his agent kept pressing him to go for it.
Boone prepped for weeks, using a technique he'd mastered when pitching his own scripts. At his audition, he brought photographs of young people shot with natural light, music queued to specific scenes (The indie rock band Bright Eyes, who scored "Stuck," was on the list and is signed for "Fault.") and a shot-by-shot description for the opening 20 minutes.
"When we hired him, we thought of him as a young Cameron Crowe," Godfrey said. "He's someone with a clear vision, open to input. He takes everything in and then moves forward."
____
Though shooting was done primarily in Pittsburgh, the search for Van Houten took Boone, producers, actors Woodley and Elgort, and cinematographer Ben Richardson to Amsterdam in October.
On touchdown, it was a maddening race to accomplish everything, Boone recalled. Sleep was a luxury. He and Richardson went straight out to scout locations, navigating the cold and rain and thousands of bicyclists coming from every direction.
"Everywhere you look and everywhere you turn there are bicycles - people riding all over the place," Boone said.
The stormy weather provided only short windows in which to shoot. Richardson used a handheld camera, which afforded Boone the most flexibility.
Amsterdam was mostly "seat-of-your-pants filmmaking," he said. "If we saw something interesting, we shot it."
A magical moment was improvised at the dazzling Rijksmuseum. Boone happened across a "cool, classical street band" and got the producers to "lock them down" for the movie. Hazel and Gus walk through a tunnel beneath the museum, discover the band and stop to listen as they play Ravel.
On the final day, Boone and the group headed along the narrow Prinsengracht canal to a three-story brick building, No. 263. It was their final destination, where 13-year-old Anne Frank wrote her diary - putting down her hopes, frustrations and longing for freedom - while she and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II.
"I knew one of the most important scenes would be at the Anne Frank House," Boone said.
The production waited for months for permission to bring cameras inside the museum. Visitors cannot take photographs; director George Stevens didn't even shoot there for his Oscar-nominated classic, "The Diary of Anne Frank." But a week before leaving the Netherlands, Boone got the green light.
"We went with the belief that this would work out," he said.
They were admitted at 9 p.m., closing time. Once inside, they had two hours.
The secret annex, the area behind the movable bookcase where the Franks lived for two years, was off-limits. So was the attic where Anne could see the chestnut tree outside. Those scenes were filmed in Pittsburgh on a replica set built to scale and authentically dressed to the smallest detail.
Because of the time constraint, each shot at the Amsterdam museum had to be technically correct; the actors had to say their lines flawlessly and hit their marks. A second take was a luxury.
"It was incredible," Boone said. "We're in this big, empty white room with four very large photographs of Anne Frank on the wall.... Nobody has been allowed to shoot there before. Everyone knew how big of a deal that was."
____
Back in L.A. with editor Robb Sullivan, Boone went into serious multitasking.
While "Fault" was shaped into its two-hour running time - the June 6 release date, when it hits hundreds, possibly thousands, of screens, is etched in stone - Boone began his adaptation of Stephen King's psychological thriller/romance "Lisey's Story." He is writing the script and will direct, working again with Godfrey and Bowen.
Boone and King have been pen pals of sorts since Boone was growing up in Virginia Beach. So when he went to Florida to record King's voice for a cameo in "Stuck in Love," the author agreed to let Boone adapt one of his novels.
"Lisey's Story" topped the list, but it wasn't available at the time. A year later, while filming "Fault," Boone finally got the go-ahead.
In Los Angeles, seated on a cushy couch in the editing room, he was in the prep stage, rereading the novel, taking notes, highlighting scenes and dialogue. Three to four months, he said, should be long enough to transform it into his own script, a tale about the widow of a famous writer harassed by fans who want access to his unpublished work.
"It's... in the same territory as '(The) Green Mile' and 'The Shawshank Redemption,' as far as it's super character-driven, but it also has another element that makes it distinctly Stephen King," Boone said.
Next on his plate is his own "Pretenders," scheduled to begin filming in New York City next summer. It's about two guys who meet in college in the '70s and fall in love with the same girl - similar to "Carnal Knowledge," one of Boone's favorite movies. One becomes a Helmut Newton-like fashion photographer, the other an aspiring filmmaker.
Boone wrote it while editing "Stuck in Love," and it will be produced by Judy Cairo ("Crazy Heart"), who gave him his directing break. The cast includes Anton Yelchin ("Star Trek"), Imogen Poots ("Fright Night") and Michael B. Jordan ("Fruitvale Station").
But for all he's accomplished, Boone said his greatest success may be opening the door for his best friend, Knate Gwaltney. Back in Virginia Beach, they were like the kids in "Super 8," making movies at the ripe old age of 8. Gwaltney just finished directing his first film, "Cardboard Boxer," with Thomas Haden Church and Terrence Howard.
After Boone got a foothold in the business, he gave "Cardboard Boxer" to his agent at the Creative Artists Agency - Hollywood's biggest - who passed it around.
"I begged him for years to let me help set it up," said Boone, who is credited as co-executive producer. "All I did was put the script in the right people's hands."
If the road to success has been slow for Boone - it was more than a decade ago that he packed up his car and headed West - it's been worth the wait.
"I feel really lucky," he said. "So few people get to do what they actually want to do in life. It's the opportunity to do something that I've wanted to do since I was a kid.
"And, I want to do the best job I can - so I can keep doing it."

John Green and support group extras talk to NPR about TFIOS

Pittsburgh's NPR station, 90.5 FM, talked to John Green on the set of the The Fault in Our Stars about the production of the movie and portraying cancer patients honestly in the story. He said:
"What bothers me most about the way that we portray people with disabilities and chronic illnesses in television in films is that we ignore them, and then secondarily when they are portrayed, it's usually as a mere tragedy or as this bright-eyed perfect person who you know, is laid-low by this evil disease," he said. "And the true story is much more complicated than that."
Green said characters with cancer are often used in books and movies to teach healthy people important lessons, which is a dehumanizing way of imaging illness to a sick person.
"One of the things that excite me most about 'The Fault in Our Stars' movie is that in every scene in the movie Hazel is wearing a nasal canulla," Green said. "She can’t breathe without this supplemental oxygen. In every scene of the movie Augustus Waters is walking with a limp because he has a prosthetic leg. You don’t see those characters just as tragedies you see them as full people because the movie is devoted to them."

They also talked to Alexander Murphy about his experience with cancer and being a support group extra in the movie. He met with Shailene Woodley before production even started.
"I actually got to meet with Shay before I even went on set," Murph said. "She actually talked to the directors and just wanted to meet some cancer patients. She just came to Oakmont and just hung out for a while. It was really cool."
Woodley had questions in preparing for her role, like "what it's like when you're on chemo, and what it's like when your recovering from chemo," Murph said. "It's like, it's difficult to explain. You’re in a whole different state. You feel sick, you feel weak, you have trouble thinking. It's really quite awful."

Bethany Leo, another support group extra, talked about her experience of being cast before she had even read the book. She said she immediately identified with Augustus and Hazel.
"Whenever other people who have never been through cancer or have never had somebody associated cancer, they kind of read the book as just a love story, but like I read it as just so much more," said 23-year-old Bethany Leo.
"I had heard of The Fault in our Stars," she said. "I mean, being in the whole cancer circle, the kids cancer circle, people are always like, 'Oh you should read this book,' or, 'Oh you should look at this …'"
But Leo hadn’t read the book until she auditioned for a part in the movie.
"I’m really not much of a book reader, but this book I could read over and over again," she said. "I guess I understand it on a different level than some people do."
Even when describing her grueling experience with cancer, including misdiagnoses, chemotherapy, blood transfusions and her PET scan, Leo uses some of the same language character Augustus Waters used in the book when describing her PET scan.
"I lit up like a Christmas tree, and it was in every single bone in my body," she said.

Shailene for The Hollywood Reporter's Beauty Issue

Shailene Woodley and her make-up artist Gloria Noto posed for The Hollywood Reporter and talked natural beauty products and more!

“One of my best friends was like, ‘You’re going to love her because she uses very light makeup and she’s the best,’ ” recalls Woodley. Says Noto: “We connected right away — we instantly started talking about tinctures and herbal remedies. It was cool.”

The rising star surprised fans when she arrived at the Elle soiree with a much shorter do. The pixie, which was cut on set for her role as a cancer patient in The Fault in Our Stars, drew all eyes to Woodley’s visage and her clean, sophisticated makeup. “It’s all about her face right now,” says makeup artist Gloria Noto, who met Woodley, 21, in 2011 during The Descendants promotional tour and bonded over their love of organic beauty.

“A flawless foundation was key,” says Noto of Woodley’s new look. She applied a fruit-pigmented moisturizer in Golden Peach by 100% Pure. Adds Woodley, whose starring role in the adaptation of YA book trilogyDivergent could propel her into Jennifer Lawrence territory: “Light, simple and very classy is kind of our M.O.”

Ansel livestream celebrates 100,000 Twitter followers

On Tuesday evening Ansel conducted a livestream in honor of his 100,000 Twitter followers. He talked about his music and Ansolo, Divergent, living in New York City and The Fault in our Stars. Here are some highlights:

Filming in Amsterdam: Ansel stated that filming TFIOS in Amsterdam was great and beautiful. They had one hard scene but the rest was strolls around the city and its famous canals.

Upcoming Projects: Ansel reveal that he has two new films he has signed onto, but he can't reveal too much. One will start filming in December/January, just right before promo for Divergent starts. Insurgent will begin filming right after Divergent premieres. The second unknown project will start filming late 2014.

Working on TFIOS: He said that TFIOS has been the best project he has worked on so far in his career. TFIOS is his favorite book. He said that being able to work with Shailene in another project was awesome because she is a great actress. Working with Nat Wolff was another highlight of TFIOS for Ansel. He said working with Nat was a lot of fun. He also was amazed that he got to work with Willem Dafoe, who was cool.

Cool fact: Josh Boone, director who in the editing process, told Ansel that he is very happy with what he has seen so far of the movie.

TFIOS in Gus POV: Although there is no plans to write TFIOS from Gus' point of view, Ansel said that it would be awesome if John Green ever decided to write it. John apparently learned a lot about Augustus Waters when he saw Ansel as Gus because John had never had to think about Gus' backstory and POV.

Ansel ended the live stream by thanking his 100,000 Twitter followers. He said that he never though 100,000 people would care about Ansel Elgort.

John Green talks about TFIOS Movie at Ann Katz Event in Indianapolis

David Lindquist from the Indy Star was at an Ann Katz Event in Indianapolis and briefly summed up in an article what John talked about.

"Back home in Indianapolis after spending much of two months visiting Pittsburgh and Amsterdam for the filming of “The Fault in Our Stars,” author John Green is raving about actress Shailene Woodley.

Woodley portrays Hazel Grace Lancaster, an Indianapolis teenager who finds love with a fellow cancer patient in Green’s best-selling novel.

“Not to brag, but I think I know more about Hazel’s interior experience than anyone who’s alive on the planet,” Green told a sold-out audience of 200 Ann Katz Festival of Books and Arts attendees Monday night at the Arthur M. Glick JCC. “I was worried that I would see Shai and think, ‘Oh, she has her own Hazel. She’s not my Hazel.’ But every day she was my Hazel, and that was such a gift to me.”

The film is scheduled for release on June 6, 2014.

It was a TFIOS reunion at the Elle Women in Hollywood event.

Laura Dern, who plays Hazel's mom Frannie, presented Shailene with Calvin Klein Collection Emerging Star Spotlight Award. According to Elle.com, Shailene was impressed with her Calvin Klein dress.

"All of the threads on my [Calvin Klein] dress are hand sewn. I don't know if that impresses you, but it f*cking impresses me," she said.

The Hollywood Reporter said Shailene encouraged everyone to “close their eyes and imagine of all the women encountered in life – including the good and bad.”

“Become pregnant with them,” she said. “Nurture this, and then send warmth to every woman on the planet. We are able to raise a baby, and in the same sense we are able to raise the world.”

TFIOS filming officially wraps

It's funny how fast time flies by when you're enjoying yourself.

For the last eight weeks, we have been closely following the filming of TFIOS movie. We are thankful that John, Ansel and other members of the cast and crew shared bits and pieces of information from set, whether it was a tweet about a joke or a picture of Shailene's yerba mate tea.

As a fansite we like to communicate with other fans and we have seen fans grow to love this project so much. In the beginning, we read a lot of complaints about casting, about filming location and more. But as filming wrapped, everyone that complained has now fallen in love again and have a renewed sense of excitement for the film. And we believe it had to do with the fact that John and others showed the love and excitement everyone that worked on this project has. We can assure you, 100 percent, everyone that worked/works in TFIOS, really cares deeply for this book.

In these eight weeks we have fallen in love with EVERY single person working on this project; from Frank, the transportation captain, to Emily Peachey, who plays Monica, to Ben Richardson, cinematographer and "lord of light," to Ansel Elgort, who plays the Augustus Waters dude, to the awesome Josh Boone, director.

So as fans, we thank you.

What happens now?

Post-Production!

Now Josh Boone will work with editor Robb Sullivan and his team to put together the whole movie. Many rough cuts of the movie will be made before the final film is done and ready for release.

In post, there will be the addition of visual and sound effects, sound mixing, creation of soundtrack and score, color correction/grading and more.
We wish them lots of luck!

We will still be keeping you informed on any news.

Now we wait until June 6, 2014.

Pictures and video from Filming in Amsterdam

We debated long about whether or not to post these pictures.

On the one hand we're a site that wants to keep you updated about the movie and the filming process. On the other hand most of these pictures are paparazzi pics (and we are not happy about that). It's a difficult situation. We don't want to disrespect or be unappreciative of all the hard work the cast and crew is doing (please don't hate us y'all) but we also want to keep you guys updated.

In the end we decided: They are all over tumblr and twitter anyway so we thought we'd post them here but make a cut under this little disclaimer so anyone who does NOT want to look at them, doesn't need to.

If you don't want to spoil yourself or for any other reason decide not to look at them, don't look at this post.
