John Green expects to make his acting debut in the film adaptation of his best-selling novel, “The Fault in Our Stars.”
Green told The Star that producers Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen and director Josh Boone extended an offer for the Indianapolis-based author to make a cameo appearance in the movie. After sleeping on the idea, Green said “yes.”
Simply attending the first week of filming is a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity, Green said. “I’m really excited for that day they start principal photography.”
The making of “The Fault in Our Stars” begins on Aug. 26 in Pittsburgh. Actress Shailene Woodley and actor Ansel Elgort have lead roles in the story of two Indianapolis teens who meet in a support group for cancer patients.
“The Fault in Our Stars” includes multiple references to local landmarks, including sculptures at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s 100 Acres art and nature park as well as The Ruins at Holliday Park.
Green said filmmakers chose Pittsburgh as the primary site for making the movie because Pennsylvania offers tax incentives to filmmakers while Indiana does not. (Some scenes of “The Fault in Our Stars” will be shot in Amsterdam).
“(It’s) frustrating for me,” Green said. “I wish this movie could be filmed in Indianapolis, because I think it would be great for the city.”
Woodley, the star of upcoming sci-fi film “Divergent,” made headlines last week by announcing plans to cut her hair to portray cancer patient Hazel Grace Lancaster. She documented the clipping on her Twitter profile.
The actress donated her hair to Children with Hair Loss, an organization that provides human-hair replacements to youngsters who have experienced hair loss because of various medical conditions. Hashtags #itgrowsback and #hairforhazel are being used by fans of “The Fault in Our Stars” who are following Woodley’s example.
Woodley is known for promoting ethical eating, herbalism and an outdoor lifestyle. Green said he admires the 21-year-old actress for “living her values.”
“You’re not allowed to be weird in Hollywood, because it’s bad for your career to be weird,” Green said. “And so, I feel like every image we get of every actor and actress is so sort of vanilla-fied. Even really lovely people whose personalities come out at times, it’s really difficult to sense them as people.
“Shailene is the exact opposite. She is unabashedly herself and weird and passionate.”
As Green mentioned in a recent Tumblr post, nearly 1 million copies of “The Fault in Our Stars” are in print. The book routinely lands in the Top 10 of best-seller lists 19 months after its release.
“I keep waiting for it to end, and it keeps going on,” Green said of the novel’s popularity. “I had no idea that there were this many people in the United States who bought books."
